The Cleveland Show
Last fall, we were told that Cleveland Brown from Family Guy was going to get his own show. Last night it premiered on Fox after The Simpsons and before Family Guy. Sean and I sat on the couch together and watched it before his bedtime.
My first thoughts when I heard about it was something along the lines of, “Why?” Cleveland wasn’t a very fun character in Family Guy, let alone anyone I would want to watch an entire show based on. The episode starts out like any other episode of Family Guy, literally. The whole Family Guy cast is there, they’re at the Drunken Clam, drinking, laughing, whatever. Then Cleveland says he’s moving to California and that’s when the show actually turns in to The Cleveland Show and is no longer Family Guy, which, ironically, is also where the show got crappy.
Cleveland and Cleveland Jr. meet Cleveland’s old high school crush, blah, blah, blah. The plot sucks, the characters are the same from Family Guy, but black. You’ve got your father, mother, daughter, son and baby boy and the surrounding neighbors. They even have a bar they go to called the Broken Stool (I think) and pretty much all the same jokes and video jumps to old memories, random thoughts, etc.
I love Seth MacFarlane as much as the next person. He’s a comical genius and very, very nice to look at, but I am sincerely disappointed with him in this instance… so far. I’m sure I’ll see more episodes and it could grow on me, but I don’t really think that the loyal Family Guy fans will find this show as good considering how similar they are but with a poor selection of who gets the spin off show. I would have much rather seen Quagmire get his own show, but I guess that would be too expected.
If you haven’t seen the episode yet, watch it below from Hulu.com
